Labour Law Reform

The Centre’s activities are concerned with the Regulation of Work and with the design and implementation of labour laws and innovative regulatory strategies that promote decent work, supporting UN SDG 8 – inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all and the aspirations of Agenda 2063. Moreover, contributing to UN SDG 10 Reduced Inequality, and SDG 13 Climate Action, considering the impact of climate change on employment and the labour market, and the development of a regulatory framework for a Just Transition to a low-carbon economy. Our research agenda is wide-ranging and dynamic, and members of the Centre are actively involved in learning, teaching and supervision, and delivery of an advanced diploma and a postgraduate diploma in Labour Law.

NEDLAC Reports

The NEDLAC Reports consist of research outputs aimed at supporting the social partners to develop policy and where appropriate legislative amendments in ongoing labour law reform processes. The series addresses identified areas of labour law that respond to the changing nature of work, the future of work, and the labour market impacts of a just transition to a low-carbon economy. It also focuses on improving social protection for non-standard workers, addressing bottlenecks in existing labour market systems, and enabling economic growth and sustainability for small and emerging businesses.

Labour Justice Podcast

 The Labour Justice Barometer podcast provides a platform for discussion of current developments within South Africa’s labour law and labour market landscape. Each episode focuses on an aspect of recent case law, legislative amendments, and policy development that shape the rights and protections of workers in an evolving world of work. Using a labour justice lens, the podcast addresses topics such as the gig economy, employment equity, social protection, and the pursuit of decent work.
